Mahavir Jayanti in India 2023 – TUE, APR 4, 2023

Mahavir Jayanti is a festival that is very important to the Jain community and is celebrated in India and all over the world with great splendor. The festival celebrates Lord Mahavira’s birth. Lord Mahavira is the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, according to Jain mythology. Mahavir Jayanti will be observed on April 14, 2022, this year.

Purpose of the celebration of Mahavir Jayanti:–  According to Jain and other religious texts, Lord Mahavira was born a few kilometers from Patna in Kundalagrama (now Kundalpur) in Bihar on the 13th day of the Chaitra month (Hindu calendar). At that point, Vaishali served as the state’s capital. However, it is debatable when Mahavira was born.

Mahavira was born in 599 BC according to the Swetambar Jains, whereas the Digambar Jains believe that he was born in 615 BC. His parents, Queen Trisala and King Siddhartha gave him the name Vardhaman.

Mahavira’s mother had 14 dreams, according to the Swetambar community’s beliefs. Astrologers later interpreted these dreams, and they all predicted that Mahavira would either become an emperor or a sage (Tirthankara). When Mahavira was 30 years old, he left his family and the throne in search of the truth. As an ascetic, he spent 12 years in exile

He practiced nonviolence and treated everyone with respect during this time. After demonstrating exceptional abilities in the control of the senses, he was given the name “Mahavira.” It is widely believed that Mahavira attained enlightenment (Nirvana) at the age of 72.

How is Mahavir Jayanti’s 2023 commemorated?

The purpose of the festival is to spread Lord Mahavira’s teachings and foster peace and harmony. Lord Mahavira’s idol is neatly placed on top of a procession that takes the shape of a “Rath yatra.” Flags are used to decorate Jain temples, and the Jains provide the less fortunate with food and clothing. Since Jainism strongly opposes the killing of animals, donations are made to stop the practice.
Other than magnanimous demonstrations, petitions to heaven are likewise presented in the sanctuaries of Master Mahavira. Other devotees frequently participate in mediation, which Mahavira promoted. On this day, devotees flock to well-known and historic Jain temples in record numbers. Monks and nuns teach Jainism and Mahavira’s teachings.
Visit any of the Jain temples to truly experience Mahavir Jayanti, which is primarily a Jain festival.
