History of Jammu and Kashmir 2023
Kashmir was a princely state ruled by the British Indian Empire prior to 1947. Administratively, the princely state’s central region was divided into the two provinces of Jammu and Kashmir. Frontier districts and semi-autonomous jagirs (principalities) were also present. The following were their divisions:
Kashmiri state: Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, and Muzaffarabad districts. Azad Kashmir later acquired Muzzafarabad.)
Jagirs inside: Poonch (a big part of it later turned out to be essential for Azad Kashmir), Chenani and Bhaderwah
Jammu area: Jammu, Udhampur, and Mirpur districts (which later became part of Azad Kashmir)
Regions in the frontier:
District of Ladakh with three sub-districts: Leh, Kargil, and Skardu (Skardu was later included in Gilgit-Baltistan).
District of Gilgit with two subdivisions: Astore and Gilgit. Later, Gilgit-Baltistan incorporated both.)
Punial, Ishkoman, Yasin, Kuh Ghizar, Hunza, Nagar, and Chilas are examples of frontier ilaqas. These districts later turned out to be essential for Gilgit-Baltistan.)
Prior to the Partition of India, the Gilgit district and frontier ilaqas were returned to the princely state under British administration as the Gilgit Agency.
Jammu and Kashmir Partition
After the segment of India and the ensuing freedom of India and Pakistan, in October 1947, following a resistance combined with an ancestral intrusion from recently autonomous Pakistan, the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir consented to India as a trade-off for equipped help. The First Kashmir War, fought by India and Pakistan from 1948 to 1948, saw Pakistan take control of large portions of the three western districts of Mirpur, Poonch, and Muzaffarabad, the entire Gilgit Agency, and the Skardu sub-district of Ladakh. The remaining princely state was organized as a separate Indian state and given the name Jammu and Kashmir.
Inside India
The following areas are under Indian control:
Jammu Division: districts of Reasi, Kathua, Jammu, and Udhampur; the jagirs of Bhaderwah and Chenani; 41% of the Poonch jagir and 11% of the Mirpur district are covered by this.
Division of Kashmir: Anantnag in the south and Baramulla in the north of Kashmir; 13% of the Muzaffarabad area.
Ladakh Subregion: Leh and Kargil districts. On October 31, 2019, it became the union territory of Ladakh.)
By 1968, the districts had been reorganized, and some of the larger districts had been broken up. In 2006, eight new districts were established: Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Samba, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kulgam, and Shopian.
In August 2019, both houses of the Indian Parliament approved the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. The bill’s provisions created two new union territories for the state of Jammu and Kashmir; Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir (union territory) as of October 31, 2019.
